Before the appointment
- Write down exactly what the appliance is doing and what it is not doing.
- Note when the problem started and whether it happened suddenly.
- Find the model and serial number if it is easy to access.
- Clear reasonable access to the appliance.
- Keep any error-code information available.
Useful details to provide
Tell the technician whether the appliance is completely dead, partly working, making a new sound, leaking, overheating, failing during one particular cycle or producing an unusual smell.
Photos can help
A photo of the model label, control panel or visible problem can help identify the appliance before a visit. Do not remove covers or bypass safety devices just to get a picture.
Safety first
Stop using an appliance if there is a gas smell, exposed electrical damage, smoke, severe overheating, active leaking near electrical components or another obvious safety hazard. Gas and electrical systems are not the place for experimental heroics.
